The Classroom Reset Day 5

Day 5!

You've made a plan. You know how you're going to prompt students to follow it.

Now you deal with the BIGGEST obstacle to actually following through... managing the endless tasks and overwhelm that accompany teaching.

The steps are deceptively simple:

  1. Accept that teaching is chaotic and it is all but impossible to actually reach the end of your to do list without making you hate your job
  2. At the beginning of each school day (before you check your email), identify the top 3 tasks you need to complete for the day. During your planning, focus on completing those 3 tasks first. Don't do xyz real quick. Don't hurry up and do something you just remembered. Focus on your top 3.
  3. If you have extra time/energy, work on other tasks after you finish your top 3.

Why lock in on a top 3 each day?

Whenever you add something new to your classroom, you're increasing the mental load you're carrying. One of the reasons it can be tough to follow through on new approaches is because everything else about teaching is so overwhelming. The top 3 decreases some of that mental load because a. you already know what you're working on when you get to planning and b. you can leave work at the end of the day knowing you met your goals.

And in the process of doing the top 3, you'll start to recognize what tasks are more essential than others and get better at prioritizing your time so you feel less overwhelm. It will also help in future classroom resets because you'll begin to identify tasks that can potentially be taken off of your plate and become student run procedures instead.
